Good Night [Gute Nacht]
from “Illustrations for Schubert’s ‘Winterreise’” (2006)
6” x 8” – giclee print on Fabriano archival cotton paper
This series grew out of a daily drawing group that I was in in 2006: one drawing per day for a year. Not sure where the idea of doing silhouettes cam from, but the monochrome of this series does fit the music (which is for piano and baritone voice). I probably just happened to have a stack of black paper in the studio. You might say that the black of these pieces is the voice and the white the piano. Perhaps the negative space equals the silence equals the snow of the lyrics.
